drinking the green kool-aid

Green kool-aid is how I like to describe the cult-like experience of raw food, or really any crazy diet. People always seem half-fascinated and half-horrified by my commitment to cleaning my colon, so I thought I'd share my experiences in excruciating detail. As with any train wreck, it's hard to look away. Nonetheless, I've managed to pick up some comrades along the way, as a result of my dear friends' curiosity and solidarity. Others interested in drinking the green kool-aid, holla.

my very own weird diet--day1

ok, unlike m, i'm not doing this on my own accord. but i'm doing it. starting today. so my diet == low iodine. what is low iodine? it means i basically cant eat anything. why? bc iodine is in salt (and sea salt! everything from the sea has iodine content), so that gets rid of a huge chunk of my edible and potable options (note, beer, wine and liquor are ok, though). other big nos--pretty much all animal products (dairy especially, but also meat, though i'm allowed up to 6 oz of meat per day, granted its completely unprocessed, fresh, organic). ok another thing that limits stuff is that iodine is apparently sometimes used as a disinfectant in prepared foods. other no nos, many beans (ie soy, red beans, pigeon peas, etc). also: no spinach (and probably other similar greens), no potato skins, some rice (some is ok, though, i guess), very limited wheat (apparently iodine content in the soil gets absorbed into wheat). luckily, i found a sprouted ezekial bread that has no wheat and no salt, and is probably ok (1 to 2 slices/day max). unfortunately, no such thing as dairy free, salt free butter substitute exists. oh well. oil it will have to be.

so the dairy and wheat is the biggest thing for me. and the no processed/prepared/restraunted foods (i _am_ in arch school which means i have zero time for prep). did i also mention that i have no usable outlets in my kitchen? so that means whenever i use appliances, i have to do it in the bedroom. like this morning:

DAY 1
i have borrowed a soy milk maker so i can make rice milk (cant use commercial bc it has sea salt, cant have soy). i soak the rice over night, i wake up early so that i can let the machine milk the rice. ok! rice milk for my coffee-except, it was super thin. hopefully letting it sit in the fridge all day will kind of let stuff settle so i can pour off the extra water, bc it didnt do a thing for my coffee. luckily, though, it left rice paste. hurray! breakfast. and lunch (with strawberries) to go with my one slice of wheat and salt free sprouted bread. with some pb.

tally so far
1 large c. coffee with watery rice milk
banana
2 large cauliflower florets
1 c. darjeeling tea with a touch of honey.
i've been up a little more than 4 hours. i'm hungry. lunch soon!
